ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM AT KSC
Permitting & Compliance - Waste Management - Biomedical Waste
Biomedical waste management requirements are found in Occupational, Safety, and Health Administration (OSHA) Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.1030 and in Florida Administrative Code (FAC) Chapter 64E-16.
The Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB) monitors medical and laboratory experiment processing operations that generate biomedical waste streams to assure KSC is in compliance with the regulations. Each biomedical waste generating organization and contractor shall provide required training (including bloodborne pathogen training) to waste handling personnel.
Records required by FAC 64E-16 shall be maintained by the biomedical waste generating organization or contractor. Records of interest include, but are not limited to, autoclave logbooks, contingency plans, waste shipping manifests, training records, operation plans, and biomedical waste bag reports.
The KSC requirements for biomedical waste management are found in the Kennedy NASA Procedural Requirements (KNPR) 8500.1 Chapter 15.
